Michael Owen has become one of the most famous sports star in Britain . every week he receives sacks full of letters from his fans and his name id never out of the sports pages of the daily newspapers . So where did it all begin ?

He was born in Chester , England , on 14 December 1979 and signed for Liverpool Football Club in 1996 , when he was seventeen . He played his first match for the club in 1997 – and scored a goal ! since then , he has broken records at every level . in the 1998 World Cup , he became England’s youngest international this century when he made his debut against Chile . in 2001 sports journalist voted him the European Footballer of the year – only six other British footballers have won that award . He has played for this country over thirty times and has won lots of medals , thought he hasn’t played in a world cup final yet
